In the Netherlands, drug abuse and AIDS prevention among juveniles occurs through a range of institutions, projects, and settings.
Abstract
These include schools, generic youth facilities, media campaigns at national and local levels, drug facilities specializing in work with juveniles, street corner/outreach work of a generic or specialist nature, residential homes, and coffee shops and bars where youth congregate. Prevention and treatment services are integrated, in that the same organization employs specialists in both fields. Prevention work is initiated at the national level by the National Institute for Alcohol and Drugs (NIAD). NIAD's prevention/education department has been involved in a range of activities. These include production of educational materials, development of a large-scale primary schools project on alcohol and tobacco, a pilot curriculum project for secondary schools, and involvement in the national alcohol campaign. Lessons from the Dutch drugs and AIDS prevention and education program are drawn for Great Britain. 10 references.
