The Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS) Program of the Office of Justice Programs of the United States Department of Justice is a Federally funded program to provide exchanges of criminal information and other services to support law enforcement efforts to address drug trafficking, organized criminal activity, and white collar crime.
Abstract
RISS has six regional projects that provide these services to local, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies throughout the United States. Required program components include information sharing and information analysis, while optional components include telecommunications, investigative support, specialized equipment pools, technical assistance, and training. Each project also has three basic administrative components: an oversight group, project staff, and member agencies. Information, training, and membership in the program all increased between 1985 and 1987. Description of a project focusing on criminal activity in the Appalachian coal industry, figures, map, and tables are included.
