The techniques used include clinical outreach, education, program information, and research. In 1981, the Minister of Social Services and Community Health committed an additional half million dollars annually for suicide prevention. A suicide prevention provincial advisory committee was also established. In the programs's first year, the committee developed an information dissemination system that encompassed province-wide education and training, facilitated the development of a coordinated interagency outreach program, and improved the knowledge base for suicide by establishing a research center in a university setting. An information clearinghouse resource center houses all of the literature on suicide in the English language published since 1955. A standardized suicide prevention training program has been implemented across the Province. Trainers have been trained to be resource people in their home areas. The Alberta program is now being established in the Federal corrections system.
