Setting standards and improving practice in all child welfare services to include services for abused or neglected children have been major goals of the Child Welfare League of America since its formation in 1920.
Abstract
The League has formulated standards based on current knowledge and developmental needs of children, with the cooperation of local, State, and national agency representatives. The standards are intended to be goals for the continuing improvement of services for children and are directed to the general public, citizen groups, public officials, legislators, and professional groups. The League periodically reviews the standards, since knowledge about children, human behavior, and service provision changes constantly. The standards focus on protective services for children who are abused or neglected by their families, social work in child protective services, the court's role in protecting children, organization and administration of child protective service agencies, the protection of children outside the family, and the community's responsibility in protecting children. 72 references.
