An update for the Division of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse (New York) Five-Year Plan describes the progress that has been made over the past year in addressing a number of the major issues facing the alcoholism field.
Abstract
The concept of the alcohol connection has two components: (1) alcohol is a factor in a wide range of social, family, and personal problems; and (2) linkages and collaborative efforts with other health and social service providers are essential in order to maximize prevention, intervention, and treatment efforts. A sample of efforts involving the Division and other agencies include membership in the Anti-Drug Abuse Council and the Task Force on Integrated Projects; collaborative efforts with various State and local criminal justice agencies, the Departments of Health, and social services; and initiatives directed at meeting the needs of the homeless, the elderly, Vietnam Veterans, and people with AIDS. The internal Division initiatives which have occurred during the past year are in the areas of prevention and intervention, treatment and rehabilitation, professional development, and research. Planning and policy development issues of longstanding concern to the Division, such as financial accessibility to services and rural alcoholism service development, are discussed along with recommendations for future Division efforts.
