Blacks and Hispanics are disproportionately affected by AIDS. Although they represent 12 percent and 16 percent of the general population respectively, blacks and Hispanics represent 24 percent and 14 percent of all AIDS cases nationally.
Abstract
In California the growth is slower, with blacks representing 9 percent of all cases and Hispanics 11 percent. The rate of increase of AIDS is much faster in minority communities than the non-minority communities. However, California is still in the early stages of the heterosexual transmission that is much more prevalent on the East Coast, so it is still possible to take preventative measures to slow down the spread of AIDS as it relates to the general population. Homosexuality and bisexuality account for 87 percent of all White AIDS cases in California. In comparison, 69 percent of all black AIDS cases and 78 percent of all Hispanic AIDS cases are in the homosexual/bisexual risk category. Intravenous drug use accounts for one percent of all White AIDS cases, while nine percent of all black AIDS cases and six percent of all Hispanic AIDS cases are attributed to intravenous drug use.
