Peer programs provide an opportunity to exert positive peer pressure encouraging functional behaviors and increasing self-esteem for those who participate as peer counselors, educators, and organizers as well as those who are recipients of their help.
Abstract
Peer-focused program strategies may include peer teaching, peer counseling, peer support groups, and peer helpers. Each type of program is built upon the premise that peers have an enormous influence whether positive or negative on adolescent behavior. By using the power of positive peer influence, peer programs have been shown to have the greatest potential for positive outcome in combating adolescent health-risking behaviors. Furthermore, peer programs empower young people to make positive change and help themselves and others through meaningful contributions. Schools are an ideal place for these programs because of the large number of students that can be reached and involved. In addition, establishment of peer programs in the schools highlights their need throughout the community and encourages other teen programs to follow suit. 8 references.
