A review of literature and research on jails found no references to psychological interventions with women in jail. Research has been devoted almost exclusively to men in State and Federal prisons and male juvenile delinquents. It is expected that as female crime continues to rise, greater attention will be focused on jail facilities and services. Many female detainees in jail reveal a history of both mental disturbance and incarceration with repeated jailings. For a number of those who are socially marginal and lack a resource and support network, jail may be the first time they are exposed to any sort of mental health case management. Aims of the mental health provider in the jail include lessening tension and anxiety, increasing feelings of self worth, and improving communication skills. It is anticipated that this exposure will provide the stimulus for further treatment outside of the jail setting through various mental health agencies and providers. Bibliography, appendix.
