This analysis of traffic and road safety policies, activities, and research in Scandinavia, Europe, and England used information from the Roads and Traffic 2000 Conference held in Berlin in the fall of 1988 and from visits to agencies in Norway, Sweden, West Germany, and England.
Abstract
Findings showed that Europe, the United Kingdom, and Scandinavia are placing high priority on improving road safety. Specific measures include publicity, increased law enforcement, traffic engineering improvements at hazardous locations, safety audits, and central median barriers on roads. Several countries are also experimenting with the use of computerized guidance and information systems placed in vehicles. Renewed efforts are also under way to complete missing links in road networks and to widen the existing infrastructure. The construction of toll roads is helping to overcome funding shortages in some areas. Photographs, figures, list of organizations visited, and 64 references.
