This combination is jeopardizing the security of several governments. The profits from drug trafficking are enormous. As a result, many modern terrorist groups are finding that alliance with drug traffickers provides access to large amounts of money that can be used with lethal effect against the target governments. Nations in which this has occurred include Burma, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Colombia, Peru, Panama, and Lebanon. However, the terrorist groups engaged in narcotics trafficking also receive negative publicity and have lost some of their support. Nevertheless, international cooperation is needed to address the problem. Needed measures include bilateral and multilateral crop control agreements, as well as international solidarity in the efforts against drugs. In addition, the drug-consuming nations of the West have a tremendous responsibility, since they are perpetuating the problem.
