This manual presents materials designed to help school athletic coaches develop a drug abuse prevention program for student athletes.
Abstract
The guidelines emphasize that athletic coaches are uniquely qualified to be involved in this effort and urge readers to involve other coaches and teachers in the effort. They also recommend that coaches discuss the materials with their school principals. The materials explain the effects of athletics on youth, the reasons why athletes use alcohol and other drugs, the enabling behaviors of coaches, and the coach's responsibilities regarding chemical abuse by students. They also present suggestions on how to start a drug prevention program for athletes, a nine-step program for athletes, suggestions for team captains, an initial survey to be given to athletes, sample letters to parents, and a survey of coaches.
