Pembroke State University (PSU) in North Carolina has developed a successful campus law enforcement program that provides a full range of law enforcement and public safety services to the campus and often to the surrounding community as well.
Abstract
Since 1980, the PSU police have been under the administrative supervision of the campus attorney. Campus police have full authority on campus and may assist in helping the town or county law enforcement personnel off campus as well. Cooperation with the town is extensive, the city police chief is a former PSU police officer. The campus, town, and county law enforcement staff work together and are quick to respond to each other's needs. Efforts to maintain community support are also important. The PSU police also try to maintain good relations with students by looking and acting professional and providing services beyond law enforcement. In addition, PSU maintains a strong commitment to training and provision of appropriate equipment. Finally, the PSU police policy is that the officers will stop wearing guns when criminals stop using guns. Photographs.
