The complex and varied nature of forensic art has been examined by identifying four concentrations within the International Association for Identification's (IAI) Forensic Art Section.
Abstract
Forensic Art is any art of a forensic nature that is used in conjunction with legal procedures. Using any number of techniques, the forensic artist's job is to provide a product which can successfully be used by the investigator and the trial attorney. The IAI provides standards and guidelines for composite artists and acts as an umbrella organization providing further professionalization and advancement of the field. Forensic artists utilize artist skills combined with understanding and the proper balance between art, science, and the law. There are four general areas of forensic art concentration: composite imagery, image modification, demonstrative evidence, and reconstruction and postmortem identification aids. The four concentrations are discussed including examples of each type. 7 figures, 18 references.
