Upon admission, veterans are identified and classified as a general veteran, a Vietnam era veteran, or a Vietnam combat veteran. An inmate self-help program available to any veteran is a resource for clarifying veteran benefits, documenting service records, or linking with veterans' organizations upon release. A resource more oriented toward the combat veteran consists of biweekly group sessions led by a facilitator from the local regional Veteran's Center. The group is oriented toward the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and other service-related problems. The program's success has depended on the following key elements: voluntary professional support from outside veteran agencies, including veterans outreach centers and Vietnam Veterans of America chapters; institutional commitment to the treatment of Vietnam combat veterans; and the strong advocacy of incarcerated Vietnam combat veterans.
