This directory includes more than 400 adult-sponsored organizations enrolling millions of American children and youth.
Abstract
These organizations represent a vast, informal system of education through which members may learn a broad spectrum of skills, attitudes, and values. They offer a wide range of choices for children and adolescents looking for something to do, for older youths and adults looking for volunteer opportunities, and for those seeking career opportunities in the youth work field. All these organizations serve children and youth of high school age and under, foster groups conducted under adult supervision, are nonprofit, and are national in scope. The organizations are grouped within categories, including hobby and special interest, political organizations, sports and religious organizations, ethnic heritage groups, and self-help organizations. Also included are a small number of organizations that provide materials, services, or information of potential interest and usefulness to youth groups seeking to enrich their programs. When these relate to specific types of groups, they are found at the ends of those sections within the directory. Other groups that provide more general services of potential interest to all youth-serving organizations are listed and described. Index.
