The Emancipation Home is a seven-unit, 3-story apartment building in an older residential section of Boise, Idaho. It houses up to nine boys and two resident staff. The program is staffed by a program director, an assistant director, and three part-time child care workers. The boys progress through a series of three levels composed of measurable tasks and corresponding privileges. Advancement in level is automatic once all tasks on a level are completed. Tasks range from opening a savings account to comparison shopping. Residents are helped to develop social skills. Skill and problem-solving groups are held at least three times a week. Most boys are enrolled in a high school equivalency program, and all are expected to seek and find unsubsidized, full-time employment.
