This analysis of drug research in Europe was researched and written in 1987 and 1988; it focused particularly on research in Denmark, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Spain and included summaries of research efforts in 13 other countries in Eastern and Western Europe.
Abstract
For each country the study focused on the areas of research, the main research institutions, research funding sources, research priorities, and the methods for coordinating research. Findings showed that efforts to develop sustained links among drug researchers have increased in the past few years. Much of the research is focused on treatment and services, the evaluation of health education, and epidemiological issues. In addition, the spread of AIDS has led to an expansion of research on drug users and the increased involvement of social scientists in drug research. Drug control policies have also been a topic of increased research. Findings indicate the desirability of coordination in research planning and funding, increased information exchange, and more international collaboration. Appended definitions, study questionnaire, lists of persons interviewed, and 42 references.
