The Johnson Foundation is examining ways to promote youth service programs, because substantial evidence indicates that students involved in quality voluntary experience do better in school, have fewer behavioral problems, and often help to pass positive values on to their peers and to younger students.
Abstract
However, an informal survey sponsored by The Johnson Foundation found that not all students have the chance to take part, and not all service opportunities provide a beneficial experience. Service opportunities include traditional programs, school-based programs, programs affiliated with religious groups, college-based programs, entrepreneurial programs, State and city initiatives, national programs, and fulltime programs. In determining how to support voluntary programs, the Johnson Foundation is considering such issues as the appropriate relationship between service and learning, the need for legislation, and the need for research on the effects of voluntary service on the servers and those served. List of characteristics of successful programs.
