This protocol for the emergency treatment of sexual assault victims in Michigan is designed to minimize the physical and psychological trauma to the victim, maximize the probability of collecting and preserving the physical evidence for possible criminal prosecution, and address controversial issues associated with collecting medical and physical evidence in such cases.
Abstract
Separate protocols are provided for child and adult sexual assault victims. In the adult protocol, general information covers sensitivity to victim needs, the elderly victim, the disabled victim, and the male victim. Other major sections pertaining to protocol for adult victims cover initial law enforcement response, the treatment plan, evidentiary and medical examinations, evidence collection documentation, medical examination documentation, and post-examination information. A section on sexually transmitted disease provides an overview of those most likely to be found in the sexually abused patient. The protocol for child sexual abuse victims addresses the treatment plan, victim interview, medical/evidentiary examination, and post-examination information. Appended forms and supplementary information.
