This book profiles seventy-four local programs of drug abuse education and prevention, drug abuse treatment, and prevention of drug-related crime.
Abstract
The programs described were submitted to a competition sponsored by the National League of Cities. The 1989 winners are included in the program descriptions. The winning programs are in Arlington, Va.; Berkeley, Calif.; Dallas, Tex.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Miami, Fla.; Orlando Park, Ill.; Rockville, Centre, N.Y.; and San Diego, Calif. The best programs coordinate efforts to combine services and share information across jurisdictions; encourage grass-roots support; and incorporate education, treatment, and law enforcement approaches. The largest number of described programs involve education and prevention. Treatment programs are the fewest in number. Each profile briefly describes the program target group, program activities, program structure, and program achievements. The name, address, and phone number of a contact person are provided for each program.
