The program is designed to be job-related, dealing with practical aspects of policing as well as knowledge. It lasts 2 years and has foundation and postfoundation training. The foundation course lasts 31 weeks and prepares recruits to a level of competence that allows them to patrol unaccompanied. The postfoundation course lasts a minimum of 30 days, with further training spread over the recruit's probationary period. The foundation course includes seven modules, each of which build on one another. After the last module, three activities occur: 1) a decision is made as to whether the recruit is ready for independent patrol; 2) the recruit's additional training needs are assessed; and 3) the training program is evaluated. Areas of interest in recruit evaluation are character traits, personal performance, communication and relationships with others, investigative skills, written reports, and decisionmaking abilities.
