As part of the Task Force on Federally Sentenced Women, the First Nations' women, a Canadian, aboriginal organization, conducted a separate investigation of federally-sentenced female offenders from the Canadian native minorities to present a more accurate picture of their members' experiences with the Canadian criminal justice system.
Abstract
First-hand, personal accounts of criminal justice treatment by First Nations' women highlight the racial discrimination and corresponding oppression felt by aborigine female offenders in the current criminal justice system. The interviews with 39 native females also indicate the need for culturally relevant research in the criminal justice field; respect must be given for the cultural traditions of the community, the culture, and the individuals involved. 9 notes.
