The Central Texas Parole Violator Facility in San Antonio is now managed by a private corporation that is providing an innovative approach to inmate literacy education together with a direct supervision facility.
Abstract
The Wackenhut Corrections Corporation (WCC) has also renovated the facility and has established an ICON computer-assisted learning system. Telephone calls placed by inmates from their phones in their living units are paying for the system. Staff for the program includes a program facilitator and two teachers who are focusing on improving English, reading, and math skills. The educational program ranges from basic literacy skill training for lower-level readers and nonreaders to work to enable qualified individuals to obtain high school equivalency certificates. The program has been operating for just a few months, but inmates are eager to use it and are showing positive gains in both math and reading.
