Programs include treatment for substance abuse, educational programs, personal enrichment classes, and vocational training. The initial medical processing of women at the Detention Facility includes an evaluation by the facility's medical staff. Meals for pregnant women reflect the recommended guidelines of the National Research Council. In addition, each woman is assigned a primary care physician at D.C. General Hospital, a public hospital. Most of the pregnancies of inmates are high risk due to previous poor diet, substance abuse, and general poor health. However, the Department of Corrections and D.C.
