The Correctional and Detention Services Advisory Commission (CADSAC) was established 10 years ago to provide an open forum for new ideas, promoting communication and citizen involvement. A predecessor, the Detention Facility Advisory Committee, had been established by the County Board of Supervisors after voters rejected a proposal for a new county jail. CADSAC was given broader responsibilities than the earlier group and was also instructed not to interfere with the management of any county department. Seven boards and committees provide representatives to the commission; the County Board of Supervisors appoints eight additional members. The commission meets monthly. Recent projects include a public conference and a research effort focusing on job projects that might affect recidivism. The program shows that a citizens' advisory group can be constructive and positive.
