This resource for professionals who work with adolescents addresses issues and challenges that adolescents confront in dealing with their sexuality.
Abstract
A review of some major issues regarding adolescent sexuality and childbearing in the United States summarizes research findings on adolescent coitus, contraception, and childbearing. Other papers discuss the new options and confusion associated with contemporary adolescent sex roles, adolescent acquaintance rape, the prevention of HIV infection among black and Hispanic adolescents, and social service needs of lesbian and gay adolescents. Five papers address adolescent sexuality in rural and urban America. Topics covered include the improvement of family planning services for rural adolescents, the needs of adolescent fathers in urban communities and their role in preventing pregnancy, and the role of the black church in preventing premature parenthood among adolescents. Remaining papers discuss networking with rural adolescents and their parents to promote communication about sexual issues, and the rural and urban challenges in AIDS education.
