Youth, youth organizations, and young social scientists can contribute to research through studies on the needs and opinions of youth, evaluations of youth work, and fact-finding for United Nations studies of social, economic, and political affairs. Young people also have many possibilities for action in cooperation with the United Nations system, in social and economic areas, and on human rights issues such as apartheid, decolonization, and peace. However, current opportunities for participation are not always well known and thus are not fully used. In addition, lack of funds or other factors often prevent youth organizations from maintaining permanent representatives at United Nations agencies. Nevertheless, bilateral cooperation between the United Nations and particular youth organizations has generally been satisfactory. In the future, the United Nations system should consider further cooperation with youth organizations in local and national action as well as in international action. The United Nations should also place greater emphasis on creating national volunteer programs for national development.
