The police response to crime must be to continue and encourage a systematic and total approach to crime prevention, both in the community and in industry and business.
Abstract
Crime prevention is not a recent idea nor novel innovation in Great Britain. What is new and innovative is the emphasis currently being placed on a formal, structured approach to preventative policing. By strengthening public involvement through Neighborhood Watch schemes, consultative committees, and an overall more flexible multi-agency approach to policing, the police response to crime has been tailored, and responsibility shared. Other crime prevention approaches include situational crime prevention, social reform, and environmental improvements. Crime detection is important, and the resources to enable and assist criminal investigation must continue to be provided without questions. These resources, such as elaborate forensic techniques and the use of computer hardware and software, assist the police in maintaining and improving the clear-up rate for serious offenses.
