BLOC (Business Leaders Against Organized Crime) is a private corporation of businessmen and community leaders in Weber County, Utah, with the goal of promoting a crime-free community.
Abstract
Organized in June 1987, BLOC's original mission was to provide additional funding and equipment to assist local law enforcement in undercover operations. However, BLOC also offers assistance for operations targeted against drug interdiction, property crime, and white collar crime and for specialized training of police officers. The corporation has a board of directors; the board president serves as direct liaison between the police department and the corporate membership. Money to fund the corporation is collected through yearly dues which are about $100. Some of the larger businesses voluntarily contribute greater amounts. By keeping the annual fee to a minimum, businesses are more willing to join in the effort. Funds are invested in high yield interest accounts, and the interest is used to finance projects. Affording contributors an opportunity to designate how funds are used is one of BLOC's major strengths. Another important facet of BLOC is the recognition given to local law enforcement officers at an annual banquet. The extensive media coverage of this event encourages community support for BLOC and law enforcement.
