Abstract
The foundation/core standards for accreditation were selected by correctional practitioners, the American Correctional Association, and the Commission on Accreditation as being basic elements of sound correctional management. They incorporate foundation compliance levels, proof of compliance, certifiable standards, and staff self-evaluation procedures. The standards focus on administration, organization, and management of adult community residential services and on fiscal and personnel management. They also cover research and evaluation, recordkeeping, the physical plant, safety and emergency procedures, food service, health care, intake, programming, supervision, and citizen involvement and volunteers. Appendixes provide additional information on the implementation of fire safety standards, guidelines for the control and use of flammable and toxic substances, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration noise level standards and define who is qualified to conduct safety and sanitation inspections.
