Chapters on the epidemiology of HIV infection include discussions of definitions and codes, the numbers and demographic characteristics of U.S. cases, the international epidemiology of AIDS, the growth of the U.S. epidemic, infection in prisoners and prostitutes, and projections for the future. In discussing the transmission of HIV infection, chapters focus on its transmission in body fluids, its homosexual and heterosexual transmission, and its transmission via intravenous drug users.
