This manual is intended to help school system administrators at the State and district level, school principles, and those responsible for program planning to develop effective drug prevention and education programs for schools.
Abstract
The text assumes that some readers have no experience and others have extensive experience in drug education. Thus, it presents both basic and advanced concepts of drug prevention. It emphasizes that knowledge alone is ineffective in preventing drug use. Therefore, prevention efforts must include four components: 1) linking appropriate consequences to behavior, including rewarding drug-free behavior; 2) setting the norm for a drug-free school environment; 3) guiding students toward alternative behaviors; and 4) involving parents. The guidelines cover the reasons that youth use drugs, the steps involved in drug education, the selection of strategies and materials, strategies to avoid, contingency planning, and fundraising. Sample materials and letters, checklists, forms, and illustrations.
