The primary responsibility of every correctional supervisor is ensuring that the job gets done and gets done well. Delegation, judgment, and problem solving are important parts of this responsibility. Delegation works best when there is a climate of trust; the duties and roles of subordinates are clearly spelled out; and the supervisor ensures that the work is done according to declared standards. Guidelines to develop sound judgment include gaining technical skill, keeping an open mind, and consideration of alternative courses of action. Problem solving involves identifying the problem, seeking the causes of the problem, stating an objective, and designing an action plan. Challenges facing correctional supervisors are supervising former peers, increasing productivity, resolving disagreements, and conducting successful meetings. In order to motivate workers, supervisors must remember that the workplace, the results of the employees' life experiences, and the beliefs of the supervisor all influence motivation. 45 references.
