This international conference was convened in June 1989 in Montreal to address the epidemiology and clinical management of AIDS, AIDS-related workplace issues, and AIDS education and counseling.
Abstract
The conference segment on AIDS research and virology covers the HIV genome and life cycle, the natural history of HIV-1 and HIV-2, and animal models. The next two segments deal with pathogenesis and immunology (immune system components and defense mechanisms, suspected HIV cofactors, and the in vitro versus in vivo debate) and epidemiology (global trends, high-risk groups, perinatal HIV transmission, blood supply safety, HIV-associated morality, and epidemiological modeling). Subsequent segments examine diagnostic tests for HIV, vaccine development, and antiviral and immunotherapeutic agents. The segment on the clinical management of AIDS discusses markers of disease progression, patient care and treatment strategies, anti-HIV therapies, immune system boosters, combination therapy (immunotherapy with antivirals), nutrition, opportunistic infections, cancer in HIV infection, and pediatric HIV infection. The final segments consider neurological aspects of HIV infection, workplace issues (occupational risk, attitudes and knowledge, and employee practices), and AIDS education and counseling. Appendixes provide additional information on precautions against AIDS, staging classification systems for HIV infection, and the economic impact of AIDS. Tables and figures.
