This special issue focuses on the connection between intravenous (IV) drug use and AIDS with particular emphasis on prevention and intervention efforts of the South Florida AIDS Research Consortium.
Abstract
Topics discussed include Federal efforts since the mid 1980's to control HIV infection and AIDS in IV-drug users (IVDU) drug use and the risk of AIDS, sexual behavior, and the risk of HIV infection. The risk of cocaine use versus opiate use, injection behaviors, and generational differences are also examined and several points regarding behavioral research and policy development are demonstrated. The risk of HIV and AIDS varies within populations, among different types of IVDUs, and among generations of IVDUs. Preventive efforts need to be socially, culturally, and behaviorally sensitive to these differences.
