The program is designed to be responsive to Florida's STOP (Serious Targeted Offender Programs) legislation. Following a review of the correctional drug treatment literature and a description of the assessment program, the treatment program is described. The program targets adult drug-dependent probationers in need of long-term, intensive treatment. Phase I of the program involves 6 months of intensive residential treatment in a modified therapeutic community located at a STOP institution. Phase II consists of 3 months of employment experience and transition work in a community residential, re-entry setting. Phase III provides 9 months of supervised community outpatient treatment that decreases in intensity as the probationer responds to treatment and becomes established in the community. The core treatment activities consist of general group counseling, relapse prevention, the treatment of criminal-thinking errors, daily living skills, leisure skills, self-help groups, drug testing, AIDS education and prevention, drug education, and individual counseling and psychiatric consultation. The program also provides education and vocational training.
