The data cover recidivism rates in relation to release variables, the nature of the current offense, personal background, criminal history, furlough participation, and release followup variables. Each table contains two types of information: statistical data on characteristics of offenders released from each institution during 1986 and recidivism rates cross-tabulated with each of the categories of the statistical data for the offenders. Data indicate that the recidivism rate for 1986 was 27 percent, the same rate as for 1985. The number of releasees increased from 1,979 in 1985 to 2,767 in 1986, an increase of 40 percent. The recidivism rate varied by institutional security level from which the offender was released. From 1985 to 1986 the recidivism rate for releasees from maximum or medium security institutions increased from 32 percent to 34 percent, and the recidivism rate for releasees from lower security facilities stayed the same (20 percent). For males, those committed for property offenses had the highest recidivism rate (40 percent); for females, those committed for sex offenses had the highest recidivism rate (60 percent).
