An introduction reviews the history of the juvenile courts, U.S. Supreme Court juvenile cases, future directions for juvenile justice, and the Ohio experience in juvenile justice. Topics covered in the legislative and caselaw review include subject-matter jurisdiction, police investigations, preadjudication procedures, transfer of jurisdiction, adjudicatory hearings, disposition of children's cases, and postdisposition issues. This manual encompasses only those juvenile court cases that involve delinquent, unruly, and juvenile traffic offender cases as well as cases that involve neglected, dependent, and abused children. Through an analysis of reported and unreported cases and the pertinent statutes and rules, all steps in the juvenile court process are traced, from the assumption of jurisdiction over a child to the termination of that jurisdiction. Where appropriate, reference is made to the IJA-ABA Standards and the laws of other jurisdictions. The manual provides legal materials most often used in juvenile court proceedings: Revised Code Chapter 2151, the Rules of Juvenile Procedure (annotated), and the Ohio Rules of Evidence.
