This analysis of prevention and interventions related to youth suicide is based on information from a 1986 conference that discussed the research on these topics, as presented in 23 papers commissioned for the project.
Abstract
The Conference was sponsored by a Task Force appointed by the Department of Health and Human Services. Participants examined primary and secondary prevention, community health and social services, the role of volunteers in suicide prevention, school-based education, interventions for special populations, early detection and treatment for suicidal adolescents, and federally-supported research and demonstration centers. Findings indicated that prevention activities are generally expensive, but little evidence demonstrates their effectiveness. Nevertheless, new ideas and strategies should be continually tried and evaluated. In addition, intervention must combine public and private efforts and involve a wide variety of support systems in the youth's environment. Research recommendations, tables, figures, texts of the commissioned papers, and reference notes.
