Based on domestic and international events of the 1980s, predictions can be made concerning the directions terrorism will take in the 1990s within the United States.
Abstract
Like most political, social, and economic predictions, they are subjective but well founded and based upon past events, available research sources concerning terrorist activities, behavioral trend analysis techniques, and discussion with experts in the field. Accordingly, the 1990s will see a moderate increase in left-wing terrorist activity from both internal and external organizations, some of them government supported or sponsored. The far right will become more unified, sophisticated, and far-reaching. Terrorists on both sides will be using state-of-the-art weaponry and chemical and biological agents to conduct large scale operations. Narcoterrorism will become a reality across the United States. The bond between terrorism and drugs will become more commonplace and formalized. Anti-abortionists, animal rights activists, and environmental protection organizations will increase their activities and turn to more violent forms of expression. Sabotage, bombings, and violent demonstrations will become more commonplace from the environmental organizations. In total, the 1990s will see a considerable amount of terrorist activity -- perhaps more than at any other time in this nation's history.
