Abstract
General guidelines for school security cover crime reporting, risk reduction, personal security/target hardening, the use of uniformed officers in schools, and the design of a school crime prevention program. General suggestions for school security include the use of a written policy for handling and reporting crimes of all kinds, staff instruction in crime prevention, security and safety announcements over the school intercom, and the encouragement of school staff to plan their reaction to an attempted robbery, rape, or hostage-taking. Separate sections detail steps in preventing and responding to robbery, rape, and hostage-taking. The recommended prevention steps and threat responses do not include the use of weapons or self-defense techniques. The emphasis is upon influencing and obstructing potential offenders through the use of interpersonal skills, knowledge of human behavior, and an understanding of the context for criminal activities.
