Part I focuses on the issues that most often arise in practice and assumes the reader's basic grasp of the essentials of trial procedure. The issues discussed are the commencement of proceedings and formalities; remand; bail; mode of trial, election, and change of election; summary trial; and committals for trial, transfer proceedings, and committals for sentence. Other Part I topics are mentally disordered offenders, costs, misbehavior and contempt of court, binding-over orders, and professional duties. Part II addresses specific sentencing problems and summarizes the leading guideline cases for particular offenses. Offenses are categorized as offenses against the person; public order offenses; theft, forgery, and counterfeiting; fraud; pornography; sexual offenses; prostitution; illegal drugs; motor vehicle offenses; and miscellaneous offenses. Appended supplementary guidance for magistrates and tables of cases, statutes, regulations and orders, and abbreviations.
