Although the victim/witness program in Orange County is a component of a nonprofit agency, its intellectual progenitor was the Program in Social Ecology at the University of California, Irvine.
Abstract
The Program in Social Ecology at Irvine was established in January 1970 to provide direct interaction between the intellectual life of the university and the recurring problems of the social and physical environment. The program not only provided field placements for students, but was instrumental in establishing cooperative efforts that have led to the creation of innovative community programs. In cooperation with several police departments, the Social Ecology program assisted in the development of a nonprofit agency that provides a youth diversion program. Subsequently, the Social Ecology Program provided the impetus for the agency to mount a victim-witness assistance program in 1978. Early services included advice and guidance, transportation, information on restitution and compensation, referral services, and information on case development and disposition. Over the years the number of services has increased; and in 1981 two ancillary programs were established: the Sexual Assault Victim Services/Prevention Program and the Child Abuse Prevention Program. 5 notes, 14 references.
