A discussion of the benefits of field induction training notes improved personnel selection, improved work quality, improved morale, reduced civil liability, yielded more effective training, and increased opportunities to implement equal employment opportunity. Current legal and practical issues addressed are the quality of field training officers, the quality of ratings, training versus an evaluation emphasis, and periodic program evaluation. A chapter on the field training officer (FTO) program covers the induction training concept, the implementation of the FTO concept, and phases of the FTO's work. Another chapter explains how to determine the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the basic job of the entry-level police officer, followed by a description of the evaluation program design for measuring the job performance of police and correctional officers in field training.
