Recommendations for effective team procedures include written definitions that are consistent with the beliefs and values of team members; goals and objectives which can be easily and readily evaluated; clearcut decisionmaking procedures; and policies for recognizing the equal or near-equal status of team members. Some of the skills which are commonly found among effective team members are accepting and giving constructive criticism, listening and showing support and interest, compromising in order to achieve consensus decisions, and learning from successes and mistakes. In order to facilitate an effective process of human interaction, several conditions have to be in place, such as support, resource sharing, processing, empathy, and accountability. The way people interact with one another is the major determinant of effective team functioning. Students who plan on entering into child and youth care should be taught teamwork in classrooms. Practitioners should be exposed to an inservice curriculum which addresses team issues and practices. 9 references. (Author abstract modified)
