This addendum to the Bureau of Justice Statistics report, "Federal Criminal Processing, 1980-87," updates tables presented in the original report to include final data for 1988 and preliminary data for 1989, covering prosecution, adjudication, and sentencing in U.S. district courts.

Abstract

Prosecution data on suspects in concluded criminal cases cover the number of suspects in cases concluded, the number and percentage of suspects prosecuted, the number and percentage of suspects whom U.S. attorneys declined to prosecute, and the number and percentage of suspects referred to U.S. magistrates. Data on defendants in cases terminated in U.S. district courts address the number of defendants in cases terminated, the number and percentage of defendants convicted, the number and percentage of defendants whose cases were dismissed, and the number and percentage of defendants convicted. Data on offenders convicted indicate the number and percentage of offenders sentenced to prison and the mean length of prison sentences. 17 tables
