This manual is both a reference book and an instructional guide that encompasses basic prisoner control tactics and skills law enforcement and correctional officers need when violence is imminent or has already escalated.
Abstract
The tactics are based on the author's "Basic Four" defenses: Hitchhiker I, L-Wrist, Front Dazzle, and Back Dazzle. The Hitchhiker I or wrist lock is used extensively in various dangerous situations, including handgun takeaways. The maneuver affords great leverage and is called the Hitchhiker I because the suspect's hand is in the hitchhiking position as a law enforcement officer applies the lock. The L-Wrist technique stands for elbow-wrist lock and means that a law enforcement officer is simultaneously manipulating the elbow and wrist to gain and keep control over an aggressor. The Front Dazzle can be used to defend against a punch to the face or overhead blow with a weapon and is even used to defend against a gun or knife to the back. The Back Dazzle is a combination using one arm to strike an aggressor standing behind a law enforcement officer or to the side. The manual covers principles of offense and defense, the use of personal weapons, the value of mental and physical development, and appropriate responses to armed or multiple assailants. Illustrations accompany the suggested prisoner control tactics.
