What was the nature of American policing in the 1800's? Organizing historical police activities around four job functions -- order keeping, service, law enforcement, and class control -- the present study provides information and analysis relevant to this question.
Abstract
Specifically, the focus is on nineteenth-century police development in Savannah, Atlanta, and St. Louis. Archival data and historical media accounts reveal a variegated pattern of policing for these cities, although there is suggestive evidence which argues for the ascendancy of the class control function. 6 notes, 89 references.
