The State and Local Assistance for Narcotics Control Program of the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986 provides assistance to State and local agencies for drug law enforcement.
Abstract
The Act authorizes the Bureau of Justice Assistance to make grants to States to support programs for improving the apprehension, prosecution, adjudication, detention, and rehabilitation of drug offenders. Eradication programs, treatment programs, and programs targeting major drug offenders are also eligible for funding. Each State is required to develop a statewide drug control strategy. Guidelines for developing this strategy focus on grant application requirements, proposed project descriptions, audit requirements, application assurances, eligible applicants, the distribution of formula funds within the State, matching requirements, allowable expenses, reporting requirements, and administrative issues. Each State is strongly encouraged to establish a Drug Policy Board to serve as a forum for communication and coordination. This board would be responsible for developing the statewide drug strategy. Appendixes contain further information on a recommended format for a statewide drug strategy and relevant forms.
