This 1990 (January) Drug Survey of New York State adult probation caseloads addresses information on departmental policies and procedures involving the investigation, supervision, and treatment of drug offenders.
Abstract
Survey results obtained from the 58 probation departments include information for each county and New York City. Fifteen of the departments have written policies and procedures for the investigation and supervision of drug offenders; and 10 departments screen, primarily through urinalysis, for drug abuse during the investigation stage; 41 probation agencies test probationers for drugs during supervision. Four departments have specialized caseloads for drug offenders, involving 149 probation positions. Statewide, 55 departments report that special drug conditions of probation are imposed for drug cases, with drug treatment being the most common condition imposed. More than half of the departments that conduct drug testing have written policies and procedures. Probation departments have identified over 400 drug treatment programs that are used to provide services to their clients. Long waiting lists was the major problem identified by probation departments in obtaining treatment for probationers. 21 tables, and 9 figures
